Le Pagliare

Pagliare di Tione, Fontecchio and Fagnano represent a unique typical panorama of the rural architecture present throughout the whole of Abruzzo: beautiful limestone constructions, constucted for use as storage for fodder and also as dwellings for the farmers of the towns near the Aterno Valley. Pagliare di Tione, undoubtedly the more well-known, has a grandious circular well at its centre. Unfortunately most of the constructions have crumbled but some have been restored. The buildings have stone doors, elegant architraved windows, and inside the floors are made of beautiful limestone floors. Due to the lack of cultivatable land in the Aterno Valley, since ancient times, the population has continually moved to higher altitudes, making use of the surrounding plateaux. Of ancient origin, these constructions were in use until the early '60's. During the summer months families would move there for even extended periods in order to be near the land where they worked. They have two floors and are either square or rectangular in shape: living quarters upstairs and stables downstairs
