t is very probable that in ancient times
Fontecchio was part of the "pago vestino" Aufeginum as the following sporadic
findings of the S.Pio and S.Vito areas in the locality of Castellone would seem to
suggest: the base of an italic-roman temple dedicated to Jupiter on which the Church of
S.Maria della Vittoria stands; stone fragments with inscriptions dedicated toVeneriae
Aufigenates; fortified centres, necropolii, cisterns, inscribed pillars and epigraphs as
well as a stone roman floor found at opus spicatum in the 1980's.

limestone slab was found with latin inscription belonging to tomb with rich funerary
supplies, among which are a large sword blade and a spear point.
As well as evidence of worship of Venus, there is also evidence that there was worship for
the divinity, Quirino, as can be seen from epigraph situated along a cornice, that bears
witness to the presence of a "aedes Quirini".

that there was also worship of Jupiter.
The ancient built-up centre of Fontecchio stood on the Roman remains where
the actual Palazzo Corvi, of obvious roman structure, now stands. In addition, during
late medieval times the old built-up town of Fontecchio developed at the top of a hill that
looks down on the underlying Aterno Valley in order to protect its population from
barbarian invasions.
