t is very probable that in ancient times Fontecchio was part of the "pago vestino" Aufeginum as the following sporadic findings of the S.Pio and S.Vito areas in the locality of Castellone would seem to suggest: the base of an italic-roman temple dedicated to Jupiter on which the Church of S.Maria della Vittoria stands; stone fragments with inscriptions dedicated toVeneriae Aufigenates; fortified centres, necropolii, cisterns, inscribed pillars and epigraphs as well as a stone roman floor found at opus spicatum in the 1980's.
Fontana trecentesca.In S. Pio, on the route between the Peligna Superaequum and Vestine Peltuinum a rectangular limestone slab was found with latin inscription belonging to tomb with rich funerary supplies, among which are a large sword blade and a spear point.
As well as evidence of worship of Venus, there is also evidence that there was worship for the divinity, Quirino, as can be seen from epigraph situated along a cornice, that bears witness to the presence of a "aedes Quirini".
A roman period altar presently situated in the cloister of the convent shows furthermore, that there was also worship of Jupiter.
The ancient built-up centre of Fontecchio stood on the Roman remains where the actual Palazzo Corvi, of obvious roman structure, now stands. In addition, during late medieval times the old built-up town of Fontecchio developed at the top of a hill that looks down on the underlying Aterno Valley in order to protect its population from barbarian invasions.
In 1145 the feud consisting of 48 families is kept by Gualtiero di Gentile, owner of the Castle.
In 1346 in a seal, Pope Clemente VI mentions the Monastery of S.Maria a Graiano.
In 1360 the Churches of S.Pietro, S.Biagio, S.Nicola and S.Maria a Graiano.
In 1425 the castle of this little centre was besieged by Braccio da Montone known as Fortebraccio.

In 1447 the "spedale" known as the Tavern from the name of the area in which is was situated is aggregated with all the annexed belongings to the "spedale maggiore" of L'Aquila
In 1448 the Monastery of S.Maria a Graiano is united with that of Collemaggio.
In 1486 Count Montorio, retreats to Fontecchio with his relatives as l’Aquila is subdued by the Pope.
In 1529 the vice king Filiberto d’Oranges divides the castles of the district from the country-side belonging to L’Aquila among which is Fontecchio which is passed on to Commander Figueroa.
In 1532 the castles of S.Maria del Ponte and of Rocca Preturo are sold to the collateral Council.
In 1533 the vice king Pietro di Soledo confirms Captain Ferdinando Figueroa with all three of the above-mentioned castles with all their belongings.
In 1534 he gives it to Figueroa and his heirs and taxes them 80 ducats.
In1591 the door "Porta da Piedi" is constructed to allow entry from Valle.
In 1648 Fontecchio is attacked by Spanish troops.
In 1755 an engraved stone shows the water source on the municipal coat-of-arms.
In 1823 the facade of the parochial church was completed as is told by the writing on the architrave of the portal.
